Adolescent Program

Ages 12-15

This age is similar to the first stage of childhood; it is characterized by dynamic physical and mental transformation.  Puberty paves the way to the very profound physical changes that are about to take place.  This stage is considered very delicate because of the rapid development taking place.  While the elementary child is more extroverted, the adolescent is drawn to look inwards.

Though doubts, hesitations, even very strong emotions (in some) are some of the characteristics of this plane, this is also a great age for creative work.  Strengthening of self-confidence is very important.  This stage requires sympathy and understanding from the adult especially because adolescents have a tendency to indiscipline and resist against authority.

"In the soul of the adolescent, great values are hidden, and in the minds of these boys and girls there lies all our hope of future progress."   Maria Montessori

Montessori Academy inaugurated its Adolescent Program in the Fall of 2007 with students in grade 7 who are entering the third plane of development.  Our plan is to add a grade in each of the next two years.  The program is guided by the principals laid out by Maria Montessori in her Erdkinder (Earth children) essays along with the psychological, emotional and social developmental needs of each child.  Students will receive guidance and lessons inside and outside the classroom in various subjects to further support and nurture their natural development and prepare them for higher education and adulthood. Courses of study includes but are not limited to: Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Humanities, Language Arts , American and World History, Geography , Chorus, Foreign Language, Community Service and various Volunteer Opportunities.

The hours for this program are 8:30am to 3:00pm, 3:30pm on Fridays.

"The land is where our roots are.  The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the earth."

 Maria Montessori
